Art and Design

Art and Design at St. Mary's

"Creativity is contagious, pass it on."

Albert Einstein

At St. Mary's, art and design enables children to express themselves in a creative, imaginative manner and through exploration. We intend to teach the children a balance of knowledge of art and the skills required, with individuality and creativeness flowing through everything they do. It enables children of all abilities to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes.

During the summer term, Art and Design is our focus, which is known as our 'create' term so that it is given the same importance as History and Geography. Each class explores different artists and media through our theme of 'magical worlds'. Teachers present their class with an enquiry question such as, 'What is the true meaning of happiness?' that is linked and explored through English. The class set about exploring their project through well thought out concepts and planning of balanced projects focused on both knowledge and skills.

The children develop their art and design skills progressively in the following areas:

  • Exploring and developing ideas
  • Evaluating and developing work
  • Digital media
  • Drawing
  • Painting
  • Printing
  • Textiles
  • 3D
  • Collage

We want our children at St. Mary's to leave with a love of art. To appreciate different artists and their styles, to feel differently towards different pieces of art and to acknowledge why. We want children to be equipped with the skills of different media and feel empowered to produce pieces of art they are proud of.
