Music at St.Mary's Catholic Primary School

Intent:

Music is a universal subject which can be accessed by all children. At St. Mary's, we intend for our children to gain a good understanding of what music is and how it makes them feel through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, composing and performing. Our vision for music is that we provide every child with high quality music experiences which engage and inspire them. We provide opportunities for all children to create, play, perform and enjoy music and to appreciate a variety of music styles. We aim for every child to leave St Mary’s Catholic Primary School with a range of musical skills, knowledge and an understanding and love of music which they can carry with them for the rest of their lives.

The Kapow music scheme was chosen by us as we want children to feel that they are musical, and to develop a life-long love of music. We focus on developing the skills, knowledge and understanding that children need in order to become confident performers, composers, and listeners. The curriculum introduces children to music from all around the world and across generations, teaching children to respect and appreciate the music of all traditions and communities.

Children will develop the skills of singing, playing tuned and untuned instruments, improvising and composing music, and listening and responding to music. They will develop an understanding of the history and cultural context of the music that they listen to and learn how music can be written down. Through music, children develop transferable skills such as team-working, leadership, creative thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, and presentation and performance skills. These skills are vital to children’s development as learners and have a wider application in their general lives outside and beyond school.

Implementation:

Music lessons at our school are designed to be engaging, inclusive, and practical. Each lesson encourages pupils to take part in a wide range of musical activities, exploring different styles and traditions while developing key musical skills and an understanding of how music works. Children take part in a variety of learning experiences, including individual tasks, paired and group work, improvisation, and teacher-led performances.

Lessons are hands-on and often include movement and dance, with meaningful links made to other areas of the curriculum.

As a Catholic school, music also plays an important role in our worship and spiritual life. Each week, pupils come together to take part in hymn singing, which not only strengthens our sense of community and faith but also helps children develop a strong musical ear. Regular hymn practice supports pitch, rhythm, and vocal control, while encouraging children to sing with confidence and expression. These shared musical experiences are a special part of school life and help to deepen pupils’ connection to the values and traditions of our faith.

Impact:

Through our music curriculum, we aim to nurture a lifelong love and appreciation of music in every child. By experiencing a wide variety of musical styles, traditions, and creative activities, pupils not only enjoy making music but also gain the confidence to express themselves musically.

Our teaching supports children in developing a solid understanding of the interrelated dimensions of music—such as pitch, rhythm, dynamics, tempo, and structure. This knowledge provides a strong foundation, enabling pupils to listen, perform, and compose with increasing skill and understanding.

By the end of their time with us, pupils will be well-equipped with the musical vocabulary and practical experience needed to take their interest in music further, whether through performance, study, or personal enjoyment. For those who wish to continue their musical journey into secondary school and beyond, we ensure they leave with the curiosity, creativity, and confidence to do so.

Most importantly, our goal is for every child to leave with positive memories of music at school—feeling inspired, capable, and connected through the power of music.

Pupil Outcomes:

  • To engage, inspire and foster creativity in our children.
  • To provide children with strands of musical learning that corresponds with the national curriculum for music:
  • Think critically about music helping them to listen and appraise to music in a thoughtful but curious manner.
  • To develop each child’s confidence and enjoyment in Music.
